Prince palais Bad Doberan

The Prinzenpalais is a building erected in 1821 in the Neoclassical style by Carl Theodor Severin in Bad Doberan.

Severin planned the palace as a residence for himself and his family. However, shortly after its completion, he was pressured to sell the house to Hereditary Grand Duke Paul Friedrich.

He was the grandson of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I and, since the death of his father Friedrich Ludwig in 1819, Hereditary Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The title Hereditary Duke corresponded to that of a Hereditary Prince, which led to the name Prinzenpalais (Prince's Palace).

In the following years, Paul Friedrich's family used the building as a summer residence.

In the 20th century, the building was predominantly used as a school and renamed several times: The original Goetheschule became the Johannes-R.-Becher-Oberschule in 1959. With the opening of the school complex on the north side of the Kamp, one of the new schools was named Johannes R. Becher, and the school in the Prinzenpalais became the Lessing-Oberschule.

From 1994, the building was used as the youth center "Alex". In 2007, it was sold to private investors who opened the Hotel Prinzenpalais in July 2009.

The new owners had already gained experience in Bad Doberan with the renovation of the lodging house built in 1793 by Johann Christoph von Seydewitz (1748–1824).
