Prinzenbau Castle

The Sigmaringen State Archive is housed in the so-called Prinzenbau (Prince's Building) in Sigmaringen city center (Karlstr. 1–3), a listed building complex, and features modern, air-conditioned stacks. The Old Prinzenbau, built by princely building inspector Uhl between 1822 and 1825, was one of the first houses outside the city and was located in the "Langer Garten" (Long Garden), which today extends as the "Prinzengarten" (Prince's Garden) behind the buildings on Karlstraße. The palace was the residence of Princess Amalie Zephyrine. The New Prinzenbau was built from 1842 to 1847 according to the plans of building inspector Bröm with neo-Gothic elements and one of the first hot water heating systems in Europe. Between 1988 and 1994, the building complex was renovated for more than 20 million Deutsche Mark and fundamentally converted for the purposes of the State Archive, with the old reception rooms such as the Garden Hall, Mirror Hall, Black Hall, and the Chapel being lovingly restored. The current archive building meets all professional requirements. The future viability of the location is also secured in the long term, as the property allows for the construction of (underground) additional stacks. The historic rooms of the Prinzenbau, which significantly shapes the cityscape of Sigmaringen, still offer an insight into the contemporary living culture of the Princely Family of Hohenzollern from the 19th century. Prince Leopold and his wife Antonia, in particular, shaped the appearance of the palace. The Prinzenbau is adorned with a beautiful rose garden.
