Prague Castle

Prague Castle, one of Europe's most renowned historical complexes, majestically overlooks the Hradčany district in the Czech capital, Prague. It is not only an impressive ensemble of various architectural styles but also the largest enclosed castle complex in the world and has served as the country's political center for centuries.
History+
The origins of Prague Castle date back to the 9th century, when it was founded and first mentioned in writing with the construction of St. Mary's Church before 885. However, archaeological findings indicate earlier settlement of the area. In the 10th century, other significant sacred buildings such as St. George's Basilica and St. Vitus Rotunda were erected. A comprehensive Romanesque transformation into a stone castle took place from 1135 under Soběslav I. After a devastating fire in 1303, the castle was rebuilt from 1333 under Charles IV, and St. Vitus Cathedral was begun. In the late Middle Ages, especially under Vladislav I Jagiello from 1471, the castle experienced a golden age with the construction of the Vladislav Hall, which combines late Gothic and early Renaissance elements. Another major fire in 1541 again destroyed parts of the complex. In the 17th century, the castle became the scene of the Second Defenestration of Prague in 1618, an event that marked the beginning of the Thirty Years' War.
