Prämonstratenserstift St. Georg

The Premonstratensian convent was founded between 1133 and 1137 by Count Rudolf II of Stade and his wife Richardis. The official confirmation by the Archbishop of Bremen dates to 1137. The first canons likely came from the Abbey of Gottesgnaden near Calbe an der Saale. St. Georg Abbey quickly developed into a regional center, gaining patronage over all churches and chapels in Stade by the early 13th century, confirmed in 1232 and 1257. Despite its early establishment, it did not play a major role within the Premonstratensian Order. A Latin school is documented from 1395. The Reformation reached Stade in 1527, with leading Premonstratensians from the abbey, such as Johannes Osenbrügge and Johannes Hollmann, becoming early Protestant preachers. Following the departure of the provost in 1529 and a drastic reduction in the number of brothers, the monastery was confiscated by the Archbishop of Bremen between 1544 and 1551. The monastic buildings subsequently fell into disrepair and were replaced by the current armory from 1798 onwards.

The former monastery of St. Georg was located on a small hill in the western part of the historic town of Stade. This town is situated in Lower Saxony, Germany, a few kilometers before the Elbe River flows into the North Sea.

Today, the armory stands on the site of the former abbey church. In the basement of this building, the crypt of Archbishop Gottfried von Arnstein is preserved and accessible, representing the only visible remnant of the former monastery. Archaeological excavations in 1961 and 1993 uncovered foundation remains of the original complex, including those of a more than 70-meter-long, three-aisled brick basilica from the 14th century.
