Prämonstratenserstift Heiligenberg

The former Premonstratensian Abbey of Heiligenberg, commonly referred to as a monastery, is located in Lower Saxony, Germany. This complex, with its origins dating back to the 13th century, is notable for its position within a largely preserved ring-shaped rampart and represents a significant testament to medieval sacred architecture and settlement history.
History+
The Premonstratensian Abbey of Heiligenberg was founded in 1212, with the order officially taking possession of the site in 1218. The abbey is first documented in 1223. It was dedicated to the Mother of God Mary and Saint Thomas of Canterbury, indicating a connection to the House of Welf. Its establishment was primarily driven by six count brothers from Wernigerode, particularly Count Konrad I. Archaeological findings confirm that Heiligenberg served as a noble residence from the 9th to the 12th century. The abbey existed until its secularization in 1543 by Count Jobst II of Hoya. Following the Reformation, the Premonstratensian convent dissolved in 1535. From 1563 to 1620, the economic buildings served as an outwork, and the ecclesiastical structures were used as a quarry for the construction of Bruchhausen Castle. The last abbey buildings were demolished in 1607. In the 18th century, an outwork building was converted into a forester's house, which later became a restaurant and eventually a hotel and conference center.
