The Premonstratensian Abbey of Jestetten, also known as Berg Tabor, was a historical monastery in the Klettgau region, located in today's Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg. It housed Premonstratensian nuns for several decades and was later briefly used by Redemptorists.
History+
The foundation of the monastery dates back to 1774, when Father Josef Helg from St. Gallen took the initiative to create a place of perpetual adoration. Despite initial resistance from the local government and the diocese, who wanted to stop the construction of a church, Helg continued his project after obtaining papal approval. In 1780, an episcopal commission removed Helg from the leadership of the monastery. After his death in 1787, the sisters continued to run the monastery under difficult conditions. An attempt at refoundation was made in 1798 by Klemens Maria Hofbauer of the Redemptorist order, who was looking for a place of activity in Germany in Jestetten. Despite the support of the Prince of Schwarzenberg and the Vicar General of the Diocese of Constance, Baron von Wessenberg, Hofbauer encountered significant difficulties, including the dilapidated state of the buildings and high debts. The situation was exacerbated by conflicts with the regional clergy and the rejection by the new chief bailiff. The monastery was finally dissolved in 1806.
