Konradsdorf Monastery

The first documented mention of the convent dates back to 1191, in a document by Archbishop Konrad I of Mainz. Recent archaeological findings disproved the earlier assumption of a founding as a double monastery around 1147 by Gerlach I von Büdingen. Instead, the women's convent was established only around 1190 under Gerlach's son Hartmann. He had the complex built as a proprietary monastery and burial site for his family, integrating remnants of a preceding church from around 1000 and a small castle into the convent buildings. The uneven construction and reuse of old foundations led to idiosyncratic structures and a distorted ground plan of the basilica's north nave. The donation of the convent to Archbishop Konrad of Mainz was likely made in the context of imperial political disputes, to improve relations between Hartmann von Büdingen and the archdiocese.

The remains of Konradsdorf Convent are located southwest of Ortenberg in the Wetterau district, Hesse, at an elevation of 150 meters above sea level. The complex is prominently situated on a gentle southeast slope above the Nidder river and is part of the walled Hessian State Domain of Konradsdorf, directly on Federal Road 275/457 between Ranstadt and Selters. The convent is also a stop on the Bonifatius Route, a pilgrimage and hiking trail.

Today, the remains of the convent are protected as a cultural monument and are part of the Hessian State Domain of Konradsdorf. The historical significance and architectural characteristics of the complex are subjects of monument preservation and archaeological research.
