Kloster Hachborn

The former Premonstratensian Abbey of Hachborn, a historic monastery, is located in Hesse, Germany. It is notable for its foundation in the late 12th century and its subsequent transformation into an exclusively female convent.

History+

The Abbey of Hachborn was founded in 1186 through a donation by the Lords of Merenberg. Giso and Hartrad the Younger (III.) transferred an allodial estate in the village of Hachborn to the Premonstratensian Abbey of Arnstein, with the condition that the site be established for divine service according to Premonstratensian rules. This donation was confirmed on May 31, 1186, by a document from the Arnstein Abbey. By 1189, this provostry was transferred to the Mainz Church through another donation. Initially, it was likely a double monastery, as there was initial mention of brothers residing there. From the mid-13th century, with the attestation of a mistress for Hachborn, it can be assumed to have been an exclusively female convent. In 1507, the monastery was reformed by the Bursfelde Congregation before its dissolution in 1527 during the Reformation. The former monastic property was allocated to the Marburg infirmaries in 1533, later granted as a Hessian fief, and from 1789, it was divided among Hachborn farmers. An economic crisis preceded the dissolution; the abbey, with its limited landholdings, was no longer able to sustain itself and pay dues.

Location+

The former monastery is situated in Hachborn, a district of the municipality of Ebsdorfergrund in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district of Hesse, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 211 m above sea level.
