Ponte Milvio
The Ponte Milvio, also known as the Milvian Bridge, is an impressive ancient structure spanning the Tiber River in Rome. Located in the northern part of the city, it served for centuries as the main entry point into Rome for travelers arriving from the north. Its history is marked by significant events, making it an important testament to Rome's past.

Originally built in 207 BC as a wooden bridge and named after the Gens Milvia, the Ponte Milvio was reconstructed between 115 and 109 BC under Censor Marcus Aemilius Scaurus with massive tuff and travertine piers, while the superstructure remained wooden. The bridge was mentioned by ancient writers such as Cicero and Tacitus and was the scene of historical events, including the arrest of Catiline's conspirators in 63 BC and the famous Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD, which paved the way for Emperor Constantine to enter Rome. Over the centuries, the bridge underwent multiple restorations and modifications, including in the 12th century and extensively in the 15th century when the wooden deck was replaced by a stone roadway. Further alterations and repairs followed in the 19th century after wartime destruction.
