Kloster SS. Trinitatis (Günzburg)

The Piarist Monastery of SS. Trinitatis in Günzburg, Bavaria, represents a significant testament to Baroque monastic architecture and history in Swabia. The complex, once a center for education and pastoral care, now houses a school and the city's local history museum, thus giving its historical substance a modern purpose.
History+
The Monastery of SS. Trinitatis was founded in 1750 on the initiative of Empress Maria Theresia and the imperial bailiff Franz Christoph Joseph Freiherr von Ramschwag. The Piarists, an order dedicated to education and schooling, took on important tasks here and also served the court church in the Margravial Castle. Following the political upheavals of the Peace of Pressburg in 1806, Günzburg and the monastery came under Bavarian rule. As part of the secularization, the monastery was dissolved as early as 1807.
Location+
The former Piarist Monastery is located in the city of Günzburg in the Swabia administrative region of Bavaria, Germany.

Today, the three-story complex with its mansard hip roof and stucco ornamentation serves as a school building and houses the Günzburg Local History Museum. The stucco decorations in the ground-floor rooms and on the portal still bear witness to the original design, attributed to Joseph Dossenberger. The museum, which reopened in 1958 after its destruction in World War II, presents an exhibition area of 670 m² across three floors and in 16 rooms.
