The Paleis op de Dam, also known as the Royal Palace, is an impressive historic building in the heart of Amsterdam, Netherlands. History+
Construction of the Paleis op de Dam began in 1648 and lasted until 1665. Designed by Jacob van Campen in the Dutch Classicist style, the building initially served as Amsterdam's city hall. In 1808, it underwent a significant transformation when it was first used not as a city hall, but as a Royal Palace. Since 1939, the palace has permanently served the House of Orange-Nassau for representative purposes and as a guesthouse for state visitors. Between 2005 and 2009, the building was closed to the public due to renovations.
