History+

The origins of the Palazzo Ducale date back to the early 14th century, when the Palazzo del Capitano and the Magna Domus were built under Guido Buonacolsi. Towards the end of the same century, Bartolino da Novara, a renowned military architect, extended the complex with the Castello di San Giorgio. In the following century, the Domus Nova was completed by Luca Fancelli, who was also responsible for the Corte Nuova with its ducal chambers and fresco cycles by Giulio Romano. The palace chapel Santa Barbara was designed by Giovan Battista Bertani. From the 16th to the 17th century, Maria Viani added further chambers. The Gonzaga family inhabited the palace from 1328 until their extinction in 1707, after which the complex fell into disrepair and was only restored as a museum in the 20th century.
