Verna Palace (Rüsselsheim)

The Palais, a magnificent example of Baroque architecture, was constructed in 1770. Its original owner, the wealthy merchant Johann Schmidt, commissioned the renowned architect Michael Fischer to design a residence that would reflect his status and taste. The Palais features a grand facade adorned with intricate stucco work, a stately entrance portal, and a mansard roof with elegant dormer windows. Inside, the Palais boasts spacious salons, richly decorated with frescoes and tapestries, and a magnificent ballroom that once hosted lavish parties and balls.

Over the centuries, the Palais has been home to several prominent families, each leaving their mark on its history. In 1839, the ownership of the Palais transferred to the Barons von Verna, a noble family known for their extensive art collection. They added a new wing to the Palais, housing a private theater and a library filled with rare books and manuscripts. In 1878, the Palais passed into the hands of the Barons von Seckendorff, who undertook a major renovation, modernizing the interiors and adding a beautiful landscaped garden with exotic plants and sculptures.

The 20th century brought significant changes to the Palais. After World War II, the Palais was severely damaged, but it was meticulously restored to its former glory. In the 1960s, the Palais was acquired by the city and transformed into a cultural center, housing a museum, an art gallery, and a concert hall. Today, the Palais is a vibrant hub of cultural activity, attracting visitors from all over the world. It stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural heritage of the city.
