Thurn und Taxis Palace (Frankfurt)

The construction of the Palais Thurn und Taxis took place between 1731 and 1739, based on plans by Robert de Cotte, commissioned by Prince Anselm Franz von Thurn und Taxis. From 1748, it served as the main administration for the Imperial Post operated by the Thurn und Taxis family. From 1805 to 1813, it was the residence of Karl Theodor von Dalberg, the Prince-Primate and Grand Duke of Frankfurt. After the restoration of the Free City of Frankfurt, the Bundestag of the German Confederation met here from 1816 to 1866. In 1895, Prince Albert I sold the building to the Imperial Post after its interior furnishings had been moved to Emmeram Castle in Regensburg. In 1905, the Palais became the property of the City of Frankfurt and, from 1908, housed the Ethnological Museum with the collections of Leo Frobenius. During World War II, the Palais was severely damaged in 1943 and 1944. Although reconstruction would have been possible, the building was demolished in 1951 to make way for a telecommunications high-rise. Between 2004 and 2009, the Palais was reconstructed as part of the Palais Quartier investment project, with a modified floor plan.

The Palais Thurn und Taxis is located in Frankfurt am Main, in the district of Frankfurt (Main) in Hesse, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 103 meters above sea level.

Today, the reconstructed Palais Thurn und Taxis is privately used. It is an integral part of the Palais Quartier and presents itself as a modern building that incorporates elements of historical architecture.
