Roskilde Palace
Palais Roskilde, a former royal castle, stands in the heart of Roskilde city on the Danish island of Zealand. It is a remarkable example of 18th-century architecture and bears witness to a long history of royal and ecclesiastical presence at this location.
History+
On the site of the current Palais Roskilde, a bishop's palace had already stood since the Middle Ages. King Christian VI commissioned the replacement of this predecessor building, and thus the new castle was constructed between 1733 and 1736. The estate played a significant role in 1807 when it served as headquarters for General Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, during the English siege of Copenhagen.
