Meran Palace
Palais Meran is a former Graz palace located on Leonhardstraße in the second district, St. Leonhard.
The palace was built from 1841 to 1843 by Georg Hauberisser the Elder as a residential palace for Archduke Johann. The house is surrounded by a large park and was built on the grounds of a former manor farm. The Archduke had the property freed from its servitude in 1834 and died in Palais Meran on May 11, 1859. It was named after his son Count Franz von Meran, who had received this title in 1844.
After the addition of the north wing in 1880, the large building was expanded in 1939 and 1963. Since 1963, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz has been located on the premises.
Architecture and Design+
The palace was built in the Late Classicist style. It has an elongated facade. The wrought-iron door grilles date from the construction period. The Archduke Johann's coat of arms is affixed to the gable. The three-aisled vestibule consists of three bays and has a shallow dome vault on pillars. The ballroom on the 1st floor is adorned with stucco lustro wall divisions, a wooden ceiling with carvings, and various heraldic images.
