Palais Menzel

The palace was built in 1883 by Gustav Menzel, inspired by the Dresden Palais Oppenheim.

Menzel, a successful entrepreneur and art collector, commissioned the renowned architect Heinrich Seeling with the design. Seeling created an impressive building in the style of the Neo-Renaissance, which quickly became a social meeting point.

After Menzel's death, the palace changed hands several times. During World War II, it was severely damaged but was faithfully rebuilt in the post-war period.

The Menzel Palace impresses with its opulent facade, richly decorated with sculptures and ornaments. The interior is equally magnificent, with spacious halls, high ceilings, and valuable stucco work.

Particularly noteworthy are the grand staircase, the ballroom, and the library, which still houses Menzel's extensive book collection today.

Today, the Menzel Palace is home to the City Museum and is open to the public. It regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events.

The palace is not only an architectural masterpiece but also an important testimony to the city's history. It tells stories of bygone eras and offers visitors a fascinating insight into the life of the upper class of the 19th century.
