King Frederick William II acquired the plot for the future palace as early as 1790, as part of the expansion of the New Garden. The palace itself was built between 1796 and 1797 at the king's expense, with construction beginning in early summer 1796 under the direction of Michael Philipp Boumann. The roof structure was completed in September 1796, and the interior outfitting continued until spring 1797. Although the palace is named after Countess Wilhelmine von Lichtenau, historical findings suggest that it was neither built for nor inhabited by her. The authorship of the design is disputed between Michael Philipp Boumann and Carl Gotthard Langhans.
