Palais Leininger Hof

No structural elements from the founding phase have survived. The building is an elongated corner courtyard, in whose basement there are still structural elements from the final phase of the late Middle Ages (around 1500). The jambs date from the Baroque era of 1730, and late Gothic remnants can still be found in the half-timbered upper floor. Corner posts are present on the Baroque-style plastered ground floor. Above the cellar entrance is a guild sign of the wine porters. A wrought-iron coat of arms with the three Leiningen eagles of the family crest characterizes the ensemble.

The property was first mentioned in 1348; a corresponding document is located in the Mainz city archive. Over the centuries, the Leininger Hof has experienced a varied history. Whether the Mainz bishop Gottfried von Leiningen was involved in the expansion of the Hof cannot be proven. The early period is difficult to reconstruct due to a sparse source situation, mainly caused by the turmoil of the Mainz Diocesan Feud. In the city survey of 1568, the property is attributed to the Walbrun family. It is possibly the Lords of Wallbrunn, as Hans IV von Wallbrunn greatly expanded his possessions in the previous century.

The property was already temporarily used gastronomically as the "Bierhaus Zum Leininger" in the 17th century. Parts of the building were converted into a locksmith's workshop in the mid-19th century. In the 1920s, the building ensemble was the seat of the Georg Freyd sauerkraut and pickled gherkin factory. Since 1978, the Leininger Hof has been in private ownership and is now commercially used by a Mainz butcher shop.
