The palace was rebuilt around 1665 by Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn and Cathedral Provost Johann Heppenheim, incorporating parts from the 14th to 16th centuries. Until 1922, it served as an orphanage. During World War II, the palace was damaged by air raids and burned out. From 1977 to 1983, it was renovated and extended by the Kolping Foundation. The east wing was rebuilt in its old form. Since 1985, it has served as the Kolpinghaus.
