Grupellohaus Palais

The Grupello House at Marktplatz 4 in Düsseldorf was built by Matteo Alberti in 1706.

In 1708, Duke Johann Wilhelm gifted the house to the sculptor Gabriel de Grupello. It is a three-story building. Originally, it displayed two lead ideal female busts by the sculptor Grupello above the portal. The busts are now in the City Museum. On November 16, 2012, two replicas made of cast concrete were inaugurated. In 1748, Elector Karl Theodor acquired the house and rented it to Lambert Krahe, who later became director of the academy. From 1769, Governor Count von Efferen resided in the house, which is why it is also called the Government House. Later, the police station was temporarily housed in this building. Since 1818, it became property of the city of Düsseldorf through a Prussian donation.

The house, damaged in the war, was rebuilt in a simplified manner. In 1969, a new council chamber for the city hall was opened in the house.
