Palais Brockdorff
Brockdorff Palace is one of the four residences enclosing the octagonal Amalienborg Palace Square in Copenhagen. Originally built for the Danish nobility, it now serves as the residence of the Crown Prince and is a prominent example of Baroque architecture.
History+
On the site of the current palace once stood a pleasure palace, built by King Frederick III from 1669 to 1673 for Sophie Amalie of Brunswick-Lüneburg. After a devastating fire in 1689, which destroyed the palace and claimed many lives, the site lay fallow. Only at the beginning of the 18th century was a small pavilion built here. In the mid-18th century, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the House of Oldenburg, King Frederik V planned a new Baroque district called Frederikstaden. Court architect Nicolai Eigtved designed four noble palaces to surround an octagonal square. Brockdorff Palace was completed in 1760 and acquired by the royal family as early as 1765, who initially housed a cadet school there. From 1828, it served as a residence for Frederick VIII and later Frederick IX. Queen Dowager Ingrid lived here until her death in 2000, before it was converted into the residence of the Crown Prince couple.
