Palais Älterer Dalberger Hof

The Older Dalberg Hof on Ballplatz in Mainz was the Mainz residence of the Barons of Dalberg until their move to the Younger Dalberg Hof in 1718.

The predecessor of the current building was the Hof "Zum Roten Haus" (To the Red House). This had been owned by the Counts of Eppstein-Königstein since 1463 and has since also been known as the Königsteiner Hof. The late Gothic residential tower, which houses the former chapel, has been preserved to this day.

Since 1597, the property was owned by the Barons of Dalberg and has since borne their name. Between 1609 and 1614, the current Renaissance building was erected, whose corner oriel is typical for many Mainz buildings of this period. In 1710, the baroque main portal was added, and the installation of the staircase and the creation of the rear terrace garden followed shortly thereafter. The English Ladies took over the property in 1846 together with the neighboring Fechenbacher Hof and founded there the only girls' school still existing in Mainz today.
