Elbląg Castle
The Teutonic Order Castle Elbing, also known as Elbląg Castle, was a significant fortification of the Teutonic Order. It was located in the present-day city of Elbląg in Poland and served as a strategic stronghold in the Warmian-Masurian region. Its history is closely linked to the Order's expansion in Prussia.
History+
The construction of the Teutonic Order Castle Elbing began in 1237 under the direction of Hermann Balk, then the Landmeister of the Teutonic Order. By 1242, the complex was documented as Burg Ilfing or Elvigge and served as the seat of an Order commander. From 1251, the castle became the main residence of the Landmeister in Prussia, and between 1309 and 1312, it housed the Supreme Hospitaller. A turning point in its history was the founding of the Prussian Confederation in 1440. In 1453, the castle suffered severe damage during a siege by Polish troops. The remaining ruins were partially dismantled in 1552.
