Orangery Palace
The Orangery Palace, also known as the New Orangery, is an impressive building in the style of the Italian Renaissance. It was erected on the Bornstedt ridge in Potsdam and is a central part of the extensive Sanssouci Park. Its special architecture and connection to Prussian kings make it an outstanding destination for history and art enthusiasts.
History+
The construction of the Orangery Palace took place between 1851 and 1864 under Frederick William IV in his royal city of Potsdam. The king himself provided sketches, on the basis of which the architects Friedrich August Stüler and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse created the designs in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Today, the palace houses a painting gallery with copies of works by Raphael, former guest apartments, servants' quarters, and halls for overwintering exotic potted plants from Sanssouci Park. Since 1990, it has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is managed by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg.
