Orangerie Bessungen
The Orangerie in Darmstadt is a small palace designed by the architect Louis Remy de la Fosse, built from 1719 to 1721. It served as a winter shelter for Sardinian or Sicilian orange trees from the surrounding park. It was built as an eleven-axis building with a two-story hall open to the south, surrounded by single-story rooms. After World War II, following the destruction of the municipal theater building, it temporarily served as an alternative venue for the Landestheater Darmstadt.
The adjoining Orangerie Park was designed by the Palatinate court gardener J. K. Ehret from Heidelberg. The symmetrical Baroque complex consists of three-tiered garden parterres, wide axes with fountains, and surrounding tree-lined avenues. The northern end is formed by the sandstone gate of the former Marktpalais.
The Orangerie building, located in the Bessungen district of Darmstadt, is now used for concerts and conferences. A restaurant is located in an annex building.
