Österreichisches Castle

The Austrian Palace is a castle in Radolfzell am Bodensee in the Baden-Württemberg district of Konstanz.

In 1619, construction of the castle began on the site of two medieval canon houses, whose building fabric was partially incorporated. It was intended to serve as a city palace for Archduke Leopold V of Austria, but construction had to be halted in 1621 due to the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War. The unfinished building, whose vaulted cellar, ground floor, surrounding walls, and portal were already erected, was subsequently used for decades as a wine storage and warehouse. In the first quarter of the 18th century, the building was completed with some modifications to the original plan. From 1734, the castle was used as a town hall, and from 1825 as a school. From 1909 to 1950, it housed the collection of antiquities, and since 1983 it has served as the city library. The castle is to be renovated and extended by 2014.
