Oertzen Palais

Towards the end of the 13th century, the Schwerin Bishop's Residence was built on the site of the present-day Palais. In the middle of the 16th century, the residence was demolished, and in 1586, the Schwerin official residence of the Cathedral Dean (and later Cathedral Provost) Otto von Wackerbarth was built. Today, only the cellar remains from this period. In 1737, a baroque Palais was erected by District Administrator Helmut Friedrich von Oertzen auf Roggow, incorporating the previous building. In 1785, Joachim Levin von Barner added a large, high ballroom to the south side. In 1802, the "Inn for Notables" was built by Friedrich August Kirchner. In 1831, the Palais guardhouse burned down. Subsequently, the Palais was rebuilt in a late-classical style. From 1945 onwards, the Palais was used by businesses, offices, and rental apartments. From 1990 to 1995, extensive renovation work was carried out. Since 1995, the Palais has served as a venue for cultural events.
