Ochsenburg Castle

Ochsenburg Castle, also known as Ochsenburg Palace, is today the remains of a castle above the Riesenbach stream near the Ochsenburg district of the municipality of Zaberfeld in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg.

The hilltop castle, presumably built by the Lords of Ochsenberg in the 11th to 12th century, was mentioned in the 14th century as being in the possession of the Lords of Magenheim and the Margraves of Baden (1321), and came into the possession of Württemberg at the end of the 14th century, which then enfeoffed the Lords of Sternfels with the property.

During the Renaissance, a palace was built as a new noble residence. In 1569, a palace winery was established, and in 1771, a granary.

After 1817, the keep was demolished, and in the course of the further 19th century, the palace and castle were torn down.

Of the former castle and palace complex of the Lords of Sternenfels, only the palace winery and the granary with its distinctive stepped gable north of the church remain. Numerous stones from the castle and palace, including several armorial stones, were incorporated into various houses in the village.
