Oberhof Manor

The Oberhof Gilsa, sometimes also referred to as Gilsa Castle, is a manor house situated in a park in the village of Gilsa, a district of the municipality of Neuental in the Schwalm-Eder district of northern Hesse.

The originally medieval, three-story, light-plastered stone building with a simple gabled roof is located west of the patron church on the northern edge of the village. It was the ancestral seat of the "Gilsa-Oberhof" branch of the local noble family von und zu Gilsa, which divided into two main branches, "Gilsa-Oberhof" and "Gilsa-Unterhof," in the 16th century. The building, with a rectangular footprint of approximately 25 x 11 m, dates from the 16th century. It was later extended with an addition to the north, towards the park side. An eastern oriel projection reaching up to the eaves was added in 1723. The south side is adorned with a striking stepped gable. The entrance on the west side is located in a portal projection that extends to the roof ridge. In 1862, the exterior of the building was Gothicized.
