Upper Castle Grüningen

Very numerous throughout the 14th century - occasionally even earlier - the Lords of Hornstein appear as castle lords in the Swabian-Alemannic region.

The Hornstein-Grüningen line has existed since 1311, and to this day, Grüningen Castle is passed down from generation to generation, which makes it something very special. Grüningen Castle took on the essential parts of its current appearance in the late Middle Ages. Before it stood a keep made of Staufer ashlar blocks, which have been preserved over two floors in the east of the current castle building and are still clearly recognizable today. After partial destruction in the Thirty Years' War, the castle was restored in 1586, with the second upper floor built in half-timbered style and structurally extended.

The entire castle complex, consisting of the castle, outbuildings, and the former patronage church (Catholic parish church of St. Blasius), is now a listed building and is thus an important cultural monument of the local region.
