Evangelical Church, Gummersbach

The church's origins date back to approximately 850 AD, when a Carolingian hall church with a rectangular choir was erected. This structure, remarkably large for a small settlement at the time, likely served as a cantonal church for a wide parish. The first documented mention occurred in 1109 in a tax register of the Cologne Severin Abbey. Around 1050, the church was rebuilt as a Romanesque hall church with a semicircular apse, probably including the current west tower. This construction was smaller but more robust in craftsmanship. A significant expansion took place around 1150, transforming the church into a three-aisled Romanesque basilica with a west tower, transept, and eastern apses, reflecting population growth and Gummersbach's central position in the region. Around 1250, the church was further extended eastward with the addition of a transept. A comprehensive Gothic redesign occurred around 1450, enlarging the transept to accommodate the strong popular piety of the era and the need for additional altars and wall paintings. Archaeological investigations in the 1960s, evaluated in 1981, identified six construction and renovation phases, offering significant insights into Gummersbach's urban history. The church's current appearance, featuring a Gothic ribbed vault, largely resulted from a renovation around 1570, when the Romanesque nave was Gothicized and the southern church aisle was replaced, while the northern Romanesque aisle was preserved.

The church is situated in the city center of Gummersbach in the Oberbergischer Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at the foot of the Kerberg.

The Oberbergischer Dom is a protected cultural monument in North Rhine-Westphalia and continues to serve as a Protestant church within the Kirchenkreis An der Agger.
