Nordhäuser Dom

The origins of the cathedral date back to 961, when Queen Mathilde founded a canonesses' convent. No remains of this early church building are visible today. In the early 12th century, the building underwent alterations and extensions, evidenced by the substructures of the eastern towers and the crypt. Around 1220, the convent for women was converted into a collegiate church for canons. A further redesign around 1250 gave the church a new, early Gothic choir with a cycle of founder figures. After the introduction of the Reformation in Nordhausen in 1524, the Holy Cross Collegiate Church remained the only Catholic entity, but became impoverished during the Thirty Years' War. In 1810, the collegiate church was secularized, and the church became a parish church. During an air raid in 1945, the cathedral suffered considerable damage, which was extensively renovated in the following decades. Most recently, the choir and nave were fundamentally restored between 2017 and 2018.

The cathedral is located in Nordhausen, a district town in the north of the federal state of Thuringia in Germany.

Today, the Nordhausen Cathedral serves as the parish church of the Parish of the Holy Cross Nordhausen in the Diocese of Erfurt. It combines Romanesque and Gothic stylistic elements, visible in the towers, the cloister, the crypt, and the Gothic nave. The crypt houses Nordhausen's oldest tombstone from 1327. In the choir, statues of the most important founders of the cathedral and 14th-century choir stalls can be found.
