New Castle Unterlauter

At the beginning of the 16th century, Adam von Schaumberg owned two other estates in the same village in addition to the manor house near the church. One of them, at the southern end of the village towards Coburg, only a few hundred meters from the manor house, was still documented in 1619 as a bricklayer in Lauter for the feudal lord Adam Ulrich von Schaumberg. In fact, at that time, a brickworks and a clay pit belonged to the estate; the steep slope of the pit is still recognizable today. In 1662, Sigmundt von Wallenroth was mentioned in documents as the feudal lord. After 1880, the farmhouse was fundamentally rebuilt by the Lauter master mason Weisheit for the former fortress commander of Metz, General von Fischer, and has since borne Neoclassical and Neo-Renaissance features. The property, surrounded by a small park with old trees, has been called the New Castle since the reconstruction, although a noble residence at this location was never documented.

In 1912, Professor Brückner Pfänner zu Tal bought the New Castle. During the inflation period between 1914 and 1923, it passed into the possession of the glass manufacturer Greiner-Holz from Igelshieb and in 1928 into that of Lieutenant Commander Eyring, from whose daughter the forwarding agent Max Engel finally acquired it.
