Neustadt New Castle

The construction of the New Palace began in 1575 under Margrave Georg Friedrich. The master builder was Peter Fahrenschon, presumably with influence from Thomas Martinotus. However, it was only completed in 1626 under Margrave Christian. With its floor plan solution, it represented an important stage in the development history of German palace construction. It was a three-story stately building of eleven or, with the tower, fourteen by four axes. The ground floor opened with basket arches on pillars. In the middle of the show facade stood the octagonal stair tower (with a riding staircase) on a sloping plinth with a round-arched entrance. It bore a slated dome with a lantern and knob. From 1794 to 1886, the building served as a hussar barracks. In 1906, it burned down completely. In its place, the elementary school was built by 1915; only the stair tower remained in a slightly altered form.
