New Castle Herrenchiemsee
The New Herrenchiemsee Palace is an imposing castle located on Herrenchiemsee, the largest island in Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. It was built as the last major construction project of King Ludwig II, modeled after the Palace of Versailles, and is now a significant tourist attraction.
History+
Construction of the New Herrenchiemsee Palace began in 1878 under King Ludwig II. The designs for the historicist building were primarily by Georg von Dollmann, with Julius Hofmann overseeing the execution. The palace was conceived as a tribute to the French Bourbon kings, especially Louis XIV, the builder of Versailles. However, Ludwig II only resided in the palace for a few days in September 1885. Work on the palace ceased with the king's death in 1886, leaving large parts of the building unfinished. Since 1987, the south wing of the palace has housed the King Ludwig II Museum.
