New Castle Gmünd
The New Castle in Gmünd in Carinthia, also known as Lodron Castle, is located in the southeast corner of the main square of the city.
In 1610, master builder Daniel Deutta began construction of a city palace for Hans Rudolf von Raitenau, the brother of Salzburg Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. After its acquisition by Christoph Graf von Lodron, Hereditary Marshal and brother of Salzburg Archbishop Paris Lodron, the castle was completed by local master builder Anton Riebeler from 1651 to 1654. In a fire in 1792, the roof structure and the wall paintings on the first floor were severely damaged. The repair work was carried out by master builder Johann Glanner from Werfen. Until 1932, the castle served as the manorial seat of the Fideikommiss of the primogeniture of the Counts of Lodron. Afterwards, Karl Irsa acquired the castle with the estates of the Lodron Fideikommiss, which he sold to the municipality of Gmünd in 1950. Among other structural adaptations, a new attic floor was added. Today, the castle houses a secondary school, gymnasiums, the city halls, and a library.
Structure+
The four-story castle consists of a three-winged complex around a rectangular inner courtyard. The north wing is connected to the Upper City Gate. From the main entrance in the west wing, a pillar hall leads into the courtyard. Above the north portal, the Lodron coat of arms is placed in the broken pediment. In the corners of the courtyard stand two polygonal, eight-story stair towers, which are connected by a three-part ground-floor arcade, with round-arched windows above. The facade is delicately structured, the framed windows with straight cornices, the floor division is done by two cornice bands each. The interiors are spacious and high, in the transition from local late Mannerism to Upper Italian early Baroque.
On the east-facing garden front stand two mighty stone lions on massive pedestals. The Lodron heraldic animals, created around 1670/1680, were originally placed in the Mirabell Garden in Salzburg.
