New Castle Althofen
The New Castle stands majestically south of the parish church in the Upper Market of Althofen. The designation "New Castle" is commonly used for both properties, Schlossplatz 1 and 2, both in their entirety and for each individual building.
A seat of the Salzburg archbishops or their administrators, dating back to the 13th/14th century on an even older core, was destroyed in the Hungarian War. The castle was rebuilt around 1500 by Leonhard von Keutschach. After secularization in 1803, the castle became state property. In 1845, Eugen Baron von Dickmann bought the estate and, with his son, altered it between 1847 and 1849 in a historicist style by adding a crenellated corner tower. The south facade received balconies and cornice bands dividing the floors. In the second half of the 20th century, the two halves of the house were sold to different owners.
Building Description+
The uniformly designed, eight-axis south facade of the two houses, as well as the continuous eaves and ridge line of the southern roof surface, connect the two objects into a single complex. The south facade presumably follows a wall line of the high medieval castle.
The house at Schlossplatz No. 1 is a four-story building with a massive plinth story over a rectangular floor plan. On the ground floor, a wall-pillar hall from the 15th/16th century is preserved. The fan-shaped ribs of the barrel vault with lunettes, emanating from the wall pillars, form net-like crossed and intertwined configurations at the vault crowns. The barrel vault with lunettes in the southwest ground floor room, emanating from flat console-like wall projections, dates from the building stock of the 16th/17th century.
The core of the house at Schlossplatz No. 2 dates from the 13th/14th century and was representatively rebuilt in the 15th/16th century. The corner tower and the stepped gable were erected in 1849. A window with a late Gothic stone frame is dated 1772. The late Gothic hall is equipped with a stucco vault.
