St. Mary's Cathedral
The New St. Mary's Cathedral in Hamburg is a significant sacred building, serving as the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hamburg. Located in the St. Georg district, it is a striking example of Neo-Romanesque architecture, built as the first new Catholic church in Hamburg after the Reformation.
History+
The construction of the house of worship took place between 1889 and 1893 as a Roman Catholic parish church for the city of Hamburg. It was designed by the Paderborn church architect Arnold Güldenpfennig in the Neo-Romanesque style. The twin-towered west facade is inspired by Bremen Cathedral. Since construction was not permitted within the old city limits of Hamburg, the church was erected outside the former city walls in the St. Georg district. The consecration took place on June 28, 1893, by Bishop Bernhard Höting. During World War II, the building suffered damage to its windows, roof, and vaults. With the re-establishment of the Archdiocese of Hamburg in 1995, St. Mary's was elevated to a cathedral church. From 2007 to 2008, extensive renovation and modernization took place, adapting the church to the requirements of a cathedral, and it was reopened on November 23, 2008, as the New St. Mary's Cathedral.
