New Residence Salzburg

Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, one of the wealthiest princes of his time, began construction of the New Residence in 1588. Initially, parts of the building served as residences for his brothers, and it is believed that it was also intended as the prince's future private residence. In 1600, his siblings moved in despite ongoing construction. However, after two of his brothers left the city, the planned use changed, and the building was subsequently dedicated to public purposes, possibly also as a representative accommodation for foreign princes. The facades were largely completed under Markus Sittikus and Paris Lodron. In 1701, the residence's tower was extended by Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun with an octagonal structure for the carillon, whose 35 bells were installed in 1702. Throughout history, the New Residence served various purposes, including as a court building, for the High Salzburg Landscape, and as an armory. Later, it housed the Prince-Archbishop's court library and became an administrative building after 1803. During World War II, parts of the building were destroyed by bombing but rebuilt after the war. After 1990, a new museum concept was developed, and in 2003, reconstruction for the Salzburg Museum began, which finally opened with the exhibition Viva! Mozart.

The New Residence is located in Salzburg, in the city of Salzburg in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 434 m above sea level.

Today, the New Residence houses the Salzburg Museum and the Salzburger Heimatwerk. Visitors can explore the preserved state rooms on the second floor of the west wing, which are adorned with mirrored vaults and rich stucco decorations. The historic carillon in the residence's tower is particularly well-known.
