Münsterhof in Dreisen

Münsterdreisen Monastery was founded in 868 as a Benedictine nunnery by Duke Nanthar and his wife Kunigunde. Saint Saturninus of Toulouse served as the patron saint of the monastery church. After the founder's death, the monastery passed into the possession of the Salians and was possibly destroyed around 951 during a Hungarian campaign. In the third quarter of the 11th century, it was refounded by the Salians as an Augustinian canons' monastery.

Münsterdreisen underwent another significant transformation in 1144 when Duke Frederick II of Swabia, supported by Count Ludwig III of Arnstein, converted the monastery into a Premonstratensian abbey. It was settled with canons from Arnstein Abbey, and King Conrad III confirmed old rights and made new endowments. This era, which lasted until the 14th century, is considered the monastery's golden age. A tradition from the Vita of Count Ludwig of Arnstein reports a desolate state of the monastery around 1140, after which Count Ludwig initiated its reform. He called Premonstratensians from Gottesgnaden Abbey and his chaplain Marquard, who became the first provost in 1145. Later, the daughter monasteries of Marienthal and Enkenbach were founded, subordinate to Münsterdreisen.

From 1320, the monastery was led by an abbot. In 1523, the last abbot, Johann Bicker, handed over the convent to Lorsch Abbey, as he was the only remaining conventual. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the complex was plundered and destroyed. In 1541, the Lorsch provost Jakob Zentner exchanged Münsterdreisen Abbey with the Electoral Palatinate. Pope Julius III permitted the dissolution of Münsterdreisen and eleven other monasteries in 1551 in favor of Heidelberg University. The official dissolution took place on September 6, 1553, when Electoral Palatinate representatives took possession of the abbey.

The former Münsterdreisen Monastery was situated in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate, nestled in the landscape between the villages of Dreisen and Standenbühl. The monastery's location was at an elevation of approximately 219 meters above sea level.

Today, the Münsterhof, which belongs to the municipality of Dreisen, stands on the site of the former Münsterdreisen Monastery. A Gothic sacrament house from around 1400, originally immured in a cellar of the Münsterhof, was later transferred to the Hane Monastery Church in Bolanden and apparently originates from the Münsterdreisen monastery church.
