Liebfrauenmünster

The origins of the Minster date back to the early 15th century, when a wooden church already stood on this site. Following Ingolstadt's division into two parishes in 1407, the “Upper Parish” was conceived as a counterpart to the “Lower Parish of St. Moritz.” Construction of the current church began in 1425, funded by a foundation from Duke Ludwig VII of Bavaria, who originally intended the Minster as his burial church. However, this purpose was not fulfilled, as the Duke died in captivity. In 1438, Ludwig donated an image of the Virgin Mary, which gave the church its name, “To Our Lady of Fair Beauty.” The laying of the foundation stone is documented by an inscription on the southeastern portal, and the first construction phase included the ring of six chapels around the choir ambulatory and the sacristy. After an interruption in construction, possibly due to the Duke's expulsion in 1438, the exterior walls were completed by 1489. The roof structure was erected around 1491. The vaulting of the nave, side aisles, and choir ambulatory took place in the following years, largely under the direction of Hanns Rottaler from 1497, who also developed the plan for the stepped hall with a raised central nave. Around 1500, work was carried out on the upper tower floors. From 1509, Erhard Heydenreich continued the construction, and by approximately 1520, the chapels on the longhouse sides were supplemented with elaborate vaults.

The Minster of Our Lady of Fair Beauty is located in the city of Ingolstadt in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany. It is part of the Diocese of Eichstätt and is protected as a historical monument.

Today, the Minster serves as a Catholic parish church and remains an important historical monument in Bavaria, preserving its historical and architectural significance.
