Mont Orgueil Castle, a majestic fortress, is perched on the Channel Island of Jersey above the village of Gorey. Its impressive location on the east coast, facing the French Cotentin peninsula, makes it a prominent landmark of the region.
History+
The origins of fortifications on the rock likely date back to the Iron Age. During the Hundred Years' War, Mont Orgueil proved impregnable, even resisting a siege by the Breton commander Bertrand du Guesclin. In the 15th century, however, the fortress temporarily fell into the hands of the French king due to betrayal. During the English Civil War, the castle served as a prison for supporters of the Parliamentarian forces, including William Prynne. With the advent of cannons, the castle lost its former invincibility.

Visitors can explore the fortress today. Along the way through the complex, one passes the Harliston Tower from 1470 and proceeds through several gates into the outer, middle, and inner wards. St Mary's Crypt, dating from the 13th century, is the oldest preserved part of the concentric layout. Exhibition rooms display historical scenes with life-sized figures.
