Minorite Monastery Ratingen

Efforts to establish a Minorite monastery in Ratingen began as early as 1651, leading to official approval in the same year. The foundation stone for the monastery buildings was laid in 1655, and the first Minorites moved in during 1656. A monastery church was built between 1659 and 1677, though it was not consecrated until 1725. The monastery was expanded with two additional wings from 1678 to 1691. From 1767, the convent also operated a Latin school. The monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization in 1834, with the last members of the order residing there until 1843.

The former Minorite Monastery is located in the city of Ratingen in the Mettmann district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The historic monastery buildings are still preserved today and are still referred to as the Minorite Monastery. After secularization, the buildings were gifted to the city in 1834 and initially served as a school. From 1884 to 1973, they housed the town hall. Following extensive renovations between 1975 and 1977, the buildings now accommodate the Adult Education Center and a cinema. Since 2019, rooms for civil wedding ceremonies have also been available.
