Minoritenkloster Neersen

The origins of Neersen Monastery date back to 1652, when Adrian Wilhelm von Viermund, Baron of Neersen, and his wife Johanna von Bongardt decided to build a church near their castle. Following Johanna's death in 1655, Adrian Wilhelm expanded the plan to include a monastery, which he intended to hand over to the Minorite Order along with the church. In May 1658, the official transfer to the Minorites took place after the Provincial Chapter of the order had given its consent. The Archbishop of Cologne, Maximilian Heinrich von Bayern, also granted his approval for the foundation in December of the same year. The church, dedicated to Saints Mary, John the Evangelist, Joseph, and Francis, also served as a burial place for the founder's family. The approximately 17 Minorites were involved in pastoral care and divine services and were also active in trade. In the mid-18th century, the monastic complex was expanded due to population growth. In 1802, Neersen Monastery was officially dissolved by the French government as part of the secularization. Prior to this, the monastic church had been elevated to a parish church to ensure its preservation.
