Minoritenkloster Helenenberg

The former Minorite Monastery Helenenberg, also known as Kloster Helenaberg or St.-Helena-Kloster Sinzig, is a historic sacred building in Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate. The complex, now designated as a monument zone, bears witness to a long history, ranging from a Frankish burial site to a Capuchin monastery and its subsequent use by the Minorites.
History+
On a hill east of Sinzig, there was originally a Frankish burial ground. Later, Capuchin monks erected a Mauritius Chapel there to venerate Saint Mauritius and the Theban Martyrs. The monastery's name, Helenenberg, derives from Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great. In 1648, Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg transferred the site to the Minorites, who built a church and monastery buildings there between 1649 and 1651. A schoolhouse added in 1655 served as a Latin school until 1802. After 147 years, the monastery was dissolved and sold during the secularization process. The church was demolished in 1806. Briefly used as an inn, the property later became a residential residence, including for the painter Karl Christian Andreae. During the First World War, it served as a military hospital. From the 1920s until the late 1980s, it was used for agricultural purposes. Only the former convent building from the second half of the 17th century has been preserved.
