Michaeliskonvent

The convent's origins date back to 1397, when Lübeck citizen Berthold Segeberg acquired a property on Aegidienstraße to establish an almshouse. The community of women that gathered there, living under monastic-like rules under the patronage of Archangel Michael, became known as the Segeberg or Michaeliskonvent. In 1450/51, Berthold's son, councilor Johann Segeberg, endowed a new building. With the support of Lübeck Bishop Nikolaus II. Sachau, Sisters of the Common Life found a home here to live according to the principles of Devotio moderna. Thirteen years later, the Michaelis Chapel was built. The community received an order based on the Rule of Augustine from Bishop Arnold Westphal. The sisters, who wore simple grey wool habits, earned their living by spinning and weaving wool fabrics, hence they were also called 'Wollsüsteren' (wool sisters). They also occasionally copied manuscripts and educated girls. During the Reformation in Lübeck in 1531, the convent was dissolved. The buildings initially served as an almshouse and from 1556 as a Lübeck orphanage. In 1720, the building underwent extensive renovation, including a brick stepped gable.

The Michaeliskonvent is located in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany.

After being used as a social welfare office until 1998, the former Michaeliskonvent has been part of the Aegidienhof Lübeck residential project since 2000. The approximately 100 surviving volumes from the former convent library are now preserved in the Lübeck City Library and are of unique importance for the transmission of the Middle Low German language.
