Merseburg Cathedral
Merseburg Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. Lawrence is an impressive sacred building in Merseburg, Saxony-Anhalt. It is known as an important stop on the Romanesque Road and bears witness to a long and eventful history as the episcopal church of the Prince-Bishopric of Merseburg.
History+
The origins of the cathedral trace back to a St. John's Church founded by Henry I, which also served as Merseburg's first episcopal church. The foundation stone for the current cathedral was laid on May 8, 1015, by Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg. A first consecration of the originally four-towered building took place on October 1, 1021, in the presence of Emperor Henry II and Kunigunde. After several collapses and reconstructions, a second consecration occurred in 1042. Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent numerous changes, notably a late Gothic redesign between 1510 and 1517 under Thilo von Trotha, which transformed the nave into a hall church. In 1545, Martin Luther preached in the cathedral, and after the death of the last Catholic bishop in 1561, the Reformation firmly established itself. Towards the end of World War II, the cathedral was damaged during air raids, but the renovated chapter house was re-inaugurated in 2006.
