Marmor Castle
The Marble Palace was the refuge of Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) in Bad Ischl (Salzkammergut). Since 1978, it has housed the Photo Museum of the Province of Upper Austria.
The Marble Palace is located in the northwest of the Imperial Park of Bad Ischl above the Imperial Villa, the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth.
Between 1856 and 1861, court gardener Franz Rauch built a Tudor-style cottage for the Empress in the Ischl Imperial Park using Untersberg marble. It was named Marble Palace after the building material, although the rock of the Untersberg consists of limestone.
The Empress retreated to the "little palace" to write poems, plan her travels, and receive friends. The Marble Palace remained private property even after the end of the Danube Monarchy, as it had been inherited as personal property within the family through the imperial daughter Marie Valerie and her husband Franz Salvator of Austria-Tuscany.
After the First World War, it served various purposes and temporarily threatened to fall into disrepair. In 1975, Markus Habsburg-Lothringen concluded a contract with the Province of Upper Austria for a period of 50 years. He transferred the rights of use to the province; in return, the province took over the maintenance of the building.
Photo Museum+
Since 1978, the Marble Palace has been one of the locations of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museums. The Province of Upper Austria housed the photo collection of Hans Frank, which had previously been in Salzburg. In addition to photos, the collection includes historical cameras. Temporary exhibitions are also shown. The building is also used for concert evenings and readings.
In 2005, the Photo Museum had 10,000 visitors; in 2006, there were 12,000.
