Marienkloster

retirement home

The Marienkloster in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a historic sacred building whose origins as a novitiate monastery of the Cellitinnen von der Hl. Gertrud date back to the early 20th century. It is characterized by its eventful history, ranging from charitable services and the care of the wounded to its current use as a senior citizens' residence.

History+

The foundation stone for the Marienkloster was laid on May 31, 1908, and the solemn inauguration as a novitiate monastery in Niederau took place in November 1909. The institution initially served as a training center for nuns and housed a nursery for young children. Retreats were also held there, attended by 180 young women in 1910. During the First World War, the monastery functioned as a military hospital, caring for 1,847 wounded soldiers. A Lourdes grotto was donated to the monastery in 1915. Between 1923 and 1925, the Marienkloster provided accommodation for families displaced due to the occupation. In the Second World War, it was temporarily used as an auxiliary hospital and evacuated in November 1944. After the war damage, reconstruction took place, and the kindergarten reopened as early as 1946. In 1947, it was converted into an old people's home, and in the 1960s, a senior citizens' residence was added. Since 1998, the institution has been managed by the Cellitinnen zur Hl. Maria.
